Never miss bin night again: how automatic bin reminders work

Bin night is the household deadline everyone knows and everyone forgets. Which bin — red, yellow or green? This week or next? And it always seems to land the one morning you slept in.

Why bin night is so easy to miss

Most Australian councils run a weekly general-waste collection and fortnightly recycling and garden-organics collections on alternating weeks. That fortnightly alternation is the trap: the day is easy to remember, but “is it recycling or green this week?” is genuinely hard to hold in your head — especially after a public holiday shifts everything by a day.

How automatic bin reminders work

The good news is that a growing number of councils publish their collection schedules as open data, tied to your property. When they do, a reminder app can do the whole job from just your address:

  • Find your council from your address (using the national G-NAF address dataset and council boundaries).
  • Look up your collection day and cycle from the council’s official data — including which week is recycling and which is garden organics.
  • Remind you the evening before, naming the exact bins to put out.

You can check what’s available for your place right now — no app required — on our bin day lookup.

Where it needs a hand

Not every council publishes machine-readable data yet. Where they don’t, the honest answer is a one-minute manual setup: tell the app your bin day and cycle once, and it tracks every future collection from there — anywhere in Australia. We’d rather say “manual setup” than guess. You can see which councils are automated on the supported councils page.

The small extra that saves a bin

A date reminder is good; a context-aware one is better. If strong winds are forecast overnight, wheelie bins become skittles. Home Heads Up adds a gentle morning nudge on those nights — put the bins out in the morning instead. That’s the idea behind all of our weather reminders.

Set it once

The whole point is to think about bins exactly once — at setup — and never again. Read more in the bin night reminder guide, or just find your bin day to get started.

Home Heads Up is a free app for Australian households — no ads, no account. It quietly sends the reminders described here, for your address. Find your bin day or see how it works.
